The life of the Maya revolved around the concept of time. Priests were consulted on civil, agricultural and religious matters, and their advice would be derived from readings of the sacred calendars. Time was of such importance that children were even named after the date on which they were born.
Mayan Calendar Horoscope-Astrology
Mayan astrology is basically a 260-day almanac known as the Chol Qij, or count of days. It consists of twenty naguals which can be thought of as archetypes roughly analogous in significance to our twelve zodiacal signs, except they are considered to be alive and petitionable.
The Maya understood 17 different Calendars based on the Cosmos. Some of these calendars go back as far as ten million years and are so difficult that you would need an astronomer, astrologer, geologist, and a mathematician just to work out the calculations. They also made tables predicting eclipses and the orbit of the planet Venus.
Mayan Calendar Horoscope-Aztec
The Mayans had rather similar beliefs to the Aztecs though with some major differences of emphasis. The most important book was what is now called the "Dresden Codex", named after the town in whose library it was lodged.
A german scholar cracked the code of the Mayan calendar making it possible for other scholars and explorers to translate the many dated inscriptions to be found on buildings, stelae and other ancient Mayan artefacts.
Mayan Zodiac Symbols
The ancient Maya and Aztecs counted days in sets of twenty. Like our Western seven-day week that is named for the seven visible planets, the ancient Mesoamericans gave symbolic names to the twenty days.
Also like our week, the string of twenty days repeats endlessly. Some readers may know that during much of Western history, it was believed that the day one was born on had an astrological effect.
Mayan Calendar Horoscope-Mesoamerican Calendar
Modern Mayan people have not provided further meaning into the symbolism of the signs, so there are a lot of different interpretations available. The lengthy count calendar and what we now call 2012 Mayan Calendar is one. The explanation why the lengthy count calendar was later to be called as the latter was merely resulting from the fact that the Mayan long rely calendar ends on December 21st 2012.
Mayan Zodiac Animals
Mesoamerican Calendars distinguish a visible night time sky that divides the 260-day-Tzolken-sacred-year zodiac into 13 animal constellations. The ecliptic or celestial equator subsequently determines the Tzolken part of the Mayan Calendar.
Babylonian and Egyptian zodiacs concentrate upon the entire 36 Decan star array during the year with a "three stars each" notion. Half of 36 Decan stars are the visible 18 Decan stars during 6-months of either winter or summer.
